Nebraska Football Announces It’s Suspending Longtime Tradition

Nebraska is suspending its longtime pink balloon custom as a result of a worldwide helium scarcity.

The Cornhuskers often hand out the pink balloons earlier than every residence sport. The balloons are then launched into the sky following the group’s first landing of the day.

The custom started within the Nineteen Sixties and the scarcity steps from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. 

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg spoke to Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts who confirmed that the helium the college will get needs to be used for medical functions.

“Buying helium in in the present day’s day and age, among the manufacturing of it’s actually challenged, and it has been laborious to get,” Alberts stated. “So we have been requested by the college, the helium that we’re getting as a college, we have to use for medical functions on the College of Nebraska Medical Middle in Omaha. And so we’re this yr not going to be offering the pink balloons for the primary time at Memorial Stadium.”

It feels like a brief answer is being labored on for this season.

Nebraska’s first residence sport will likely be on Sept. 3 in opposition to North Dakota.
