Today is Nebraska Statehood Day, marking the 157 anniversary of Nebraska officially becoming the 37th state in the Union.

Nebraska is unique; overcoming two vetoes by President Andrew Johnson to become the only state admitted despite a presidential veto .

Congressional Republicans passed a statehood bill for Nebraska in 1866, but President Johnson vetoed the measure.

A second attempt the following February was also vetoed, but this time supporters had the votes to override the veto and Nebraska was officially approved as a state on March 1st, 1867.
