Missouri could enact legislation that would educate students in grades 6 through 12 about the “dehumanization that minority groups have experienced.” The bill is based around the story of Celia, a slave who was given the death penalty in the mid-1800s after defending herself against her owner.
Sen. Brian Williams, D-University City, said that his bill is “the epitome of what it means to have family.”
“For those who value family and understand the importance of that and clearly the issue that we should not allow this type of dehumanization to happen in our state is really important,” he said.
If enacted, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education would work on a pilot project to use in up to 25 school districts to study its impact and success.
The curriculum topics could include studying “dehumanization practices” that have been employed throughout the state’s history and interventions that could be available to prevent it from happening in the future.
The bill received no opposition during a committee hearing.
