Was a Minnesota House special election in the east metro a referendum on the Trump administration?

“Occasionally I would get those comments, but my response was true to my message, which is we need to focus on those issues in the state of Minnesota, which is affordability, crime and public education,” he said.
Gottfried’s addition to the chamber will bring Democrats back to 67 members, restoring a tie in the chamber and shifting the two parties into a negotiated agreement where they must share power.
The high-profile nature of the race in Minnesota likely boosted turnout, but Democrats say they’ve also seen higher turnout from their party in special elections across the country this year.
Heather Williams, president of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, an arm of the national party that works on statehouse races, said Democratic candidates in special legislative elections are outperforming in races by an average of 9 percentage points.
On the same night as Minnesota’s special election, a Democratic candidate in Iowa came within 5 percentage points of winning a special legislative election for a seat that Trump had carried by 27 points last fall.
“As chaos reigns in Washington, Democrats have a real opportunity to fight back in our state legislatures where there are winnable and chamber-deciding special elections nearly every single week,” said Williams, whose group gave $100,000 to the House DFL caucus ahead of the Roseville special election.

Minnesota agencies remind everyone about safety ahead of holiday weekend

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – A holiday synonymous with consuming alcohol is here and Minnesota law enforcement is ready.
Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, State Patrol and others gathered on Friday ahead of St. Patrick’s Day to remind everyone to be safe and responsible during the celebration.
“We want people to have a good time. Enjoy yourselves, make the holiday a holiday, but we also want people to be very smart,” Director of the Office of Traffic Safety Mike Hanson said. “Know this, if you drive impaired you will be arrested and there will be consequences for your choice.”
The Minnesota State Patrol will be enforcing extra DWI enforcements throughout the holiday weekend. So far in 2025, there have been 51 Minnesotans who lost their lives in traffic accidents. Alcohol was a contributing factor in at least seven of these deaths.
“A night out isn’t worth ruining by injuring someone or possibly killing somebody, being arrested, having a significant amount of fines [and] possibly losing your license,” Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Mike Lee said. “Please think ahead and drive safely.”
During the 2024 St. Patrick’s Day weekend, there were 438 DWI Arrests from Friday to Monday. From 2019-2024, on St. Patrick’s Day, there were at least 10 fatalities. This is according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Minnesota DNR sets daily 2-walleye limit on Mille Lacs Lake this summer

Anglers on one of Minnesota’s largest lakes will be able to keep two walleye daily starting this spring, wildlife officials said Thursday.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said the eased regulations go into effect May 10 and last through Nov. 30. Harvested walleye must be longer than 17 inches, and only one can be longer than 20.
The DNR attributed the easement to a rebounded population following years of catch-and-release restrictions.
“The walleye population in Mille Lacs is currently in a good place,” said DNR fisheries section manager Brad Parsons . “Ojibwe Tribes and the Minnesota DNR limited harvest, which allowed for an increased number of adult spawning walleye, and a strong 2024 year class that bodes well for the future health of the fishery.”
The DNR and Ojibwe treaty tribes set the annual harvest limit on Mille Lacs. This year’s mark is set at 113,600 for state-licensed fishers and 88,000 pounds for Ojibwe treaty fishers.
Ample populations of the fish walleye feed on, such as yellow perch and cisco, have also contributed to the walleye’s resurgence, officials said. Accordingly, the daily limit for yellow perch on the lake was cut from 20 to five.
The walleye is Minnesota’s state fish.
