Minnesota Queer Caucus lists Equal Rights Amendment among legislative priorities

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KTTC) – Lawmakers in Minnesota’s Queer Caucus unveiled their list of legislative priorities on Thursday, setting the stage to further their efforts after a productive 2023 legislative session.

“Last session, our caucus was an undeniable force in advancing equity and supporting our community. We declared Minnesota trans refuge state ban conversion therapy for minors and vulnerable adults and more,” said Rep. Brion Curran (DFL – Vadnais Heights).

Lawmakers in the caucus, which was formed ahead of the 2023 legislative session, explained they aim to expand access to gender-affirming care and further cement the state as a “trans refuge state.”

“This year the queer caucus will fulfill this promise of trans refuge. Our legislative initiatives seek to provide workforce, housing, and educational support to families and individuals who are relocating to Minnesota,” said Representative Leigh Finke (DFL – St. Paul).

Finke believes the best way to ensure permanent rights for LGBTQIA+ Minnesotans is to pass an Equal Rights Amendment or ERA.

“Passage of a trans-inclusive ERA and the long-term protection of trans rights is crucial for the long-term health and safety of my community and of all of our communities,” she said.

Finke’s goal aligns with much of her party’s; earlier this week DFLers announced plans to introduce an ERA with the intent of putting it on the ballot in 2026.

“Minnesota has a chance to cement the rights of trans, nonbinary, two-spirit and intersex individuals in our state constitution,” said Finke.
