Minnesota Power Unveils Plans for Two Major Solar Projects in Royalton and Cohasset

(KNSI) — Minnesota Power intends to build two major solar projects, including one in Royalton.

The Regal Solar project would have a capacity of 119.5 megawatts from approximately 255,000 bifacial solar modules. Those are panels that have solar cells on the front and back sides. It would take up 800 acres and would be online by mid-2027. The company says it would create a 3.5 mile collector line and substation to connect to the regional grid.

The Boswell Solar project would be located near Cohasset, partially on land owned by Minnesota Power. It would have an 85 megawatt capacity on 600 acres with around 180,000 bifacial solar modules and be online in mid-2027. Company officials say it utilizes existing infrastructure, minimizing construction needs.

Minnesota Power serves 150,000 customers, 14 municipalities, and large industrial customers across a 26,000 square mile area.

Regulatory approvals from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission and other entities are required before construction can start.
