MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee County judge sentenced a 23-year-old Milwaukee woman to 12 months of probation for starting a five-alarm fire that tore through a massive warehouse on the city’s north side in May.

Ellen Stevens appeared in court Thursday, Aug. 13, where she pleaded guilty to one count of negligent handling of burning material for the fire, which happened on May 20 around 6:10 p.m. near 32nd and Hampton streets.

Stevens, who was 22 at the time of the fire, was arrested after investigators said she handled burning material that caused the vacant building to catch fire. Fire crews remained on scene as demolition began, continuing to pour water on hotspots throughout the day.

The warehouse was owned by Bishops Creek Community Development Corporation and was part of a larger vision by the late Bishop Sedgwick Daniels. Church leaders said plans for the property included affordable housing, office space, and a hotel — all aimed at bringing more investment to the area.

On Thursday, Stevens was also ordered to pay $6,000 in restitution to Bishops Creek Community Development Corp. at a rate of $500 monthly within 12 months.

There were a few of impressive beginnings in the opening preseason matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium Thursday night, Aug 13.

Packers rookie Trey Smack was the entire offense, kicking three field goal, including a 58-yarder in a 28-9 loss.

Steelers rookie Drew Allar threw for 183 yards and was at least partially responsible for three of the Steelers’ four touchdowns.

And Milwaukee native Riley Nowakowski, drafted by the Steelers in the fifth round after helping Indiana win a national championship, caught Allar’s second touchdown pass late in the second half.

Nowakowski, who scored in the national title game, transferred to Indiana after playing two years at Wisconsin. He caught 32 passes for 387 yards and two touchdowns last season while playing tight end with the Hoosiers. He is currently listed as a fullback on the Steelers’ roster.

Steelers head coach Mile McCarthy has been impressed with what he has seen from the Marquette University High School graduate in training camp.

McCarthy called Nowakowski’s number twice near in the end zone against the Packers. Nowakowski was unable to secure a low throw from Allar at the goal line with the Steelers leading 14-9 in the second half. But Allar found him in the red zone again on the Steelers’ final drive and Nowakowski made a slick, one-handed 4-yard touchdown catch.

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee police are searching for a suspect who shot and killed a 16-year-old from a vehicle on the city’s north side Thursday morning.

The shooting happened just after 9:30 a.m. near North 40th and West Clarke streets.

The teen died at the scene. Their identity has not been released.

An investigation into what led up to the shooting is ongoing, as is the search for the suspect.
