Milwaukee photography project transforms kids into trailblazers
MILWAUKEE – Throughout a sequence of photograph shoots earlier this 12 months, younger college students at Milwaukee Faculty Prep reworked into Black icons and trailblazers.
Milwaukee Faculty Prep’s artwork director and media coordinator Terrance Sims is the undertaking creator. Every February, he makes use of images to interact, educate and rejoice Black Historical past Month.
“Whenever you see an image of a child smiling, you’re simply hooked to it,” Sims stated.
Sims’ images undertaking began six years in the past with three women recreating a poster for the film “Hidden Figures.” He provides youngsters props and costumes, permitting them to spotlight influential Black figures.

“I actually really feel like when you already know who you might be, you might be simply higher throughout. How will you know your self with out figuring out your roots and your previous?” Sims stated. “This can be a good alternative for them to get in there, get excited and see their previous come to life.”
At a January photograph shoot, a boy dressed up as director Spike Lee. Different boys reworked into Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Barack Obama. Ladies turned First Woman Michelle Obama, astronaut Mae Jemison and different trailblazing girls. Sims took photos of dozens of kids.
Photoshop and creativeness make the inexperienced display photographs come to life. They’re printed, shared on Milwaukee Faculty Prep’s social media and used to instructing instruments.

“I hope when folks see it, they get extra excited to study Black tradition,” Sim stated. “I believe we’re greater than what meets the attention.”
