Milwaukee Brewers: Quintin Berry At Center Of Benches Clearing Vs Boston Red Sox; 1 Theory As To Cause Prevails

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped the final game of their series against the Boston Red Sox by the low score of 2-1. Oliver Dunn, who was just called up today from Triple-A Nashville (outfielder Joey Wiemer was sent down in a corresponding move) scored the only run on a William Contreras RBI single. Tobias Myers. the Brewers’ starter, could not get through five innings, but allowed just a single run.

Indeed, hard hit balls were hard to come by on a sunny day in Boston, and the scoreboard certainly reflected that. However, whatever fireworks both offenses lacked was made up for by yet another benches clearing altercation between the Brewers and their opponent.

After the top of the seventh inning had ended, first base coach Quintin Berry had to be escorted to the Brewers’ dugout after he and Red Sox pitcher Chris Martin started yelling at each other. Both benches cleared, but punches were thrown.

For a while, many wondered what might have caused Berry to get so heated. After some rewatching of the altercation, some fans believe they might have identified the cause.

“If I read lips correctly, Chris Martin walked by Berry and said something to the effect of ‘F—ing bunts you f—ing b—-,” one fan posted. This was agreed upon by both Brewers analysts and fans.

Prior to the end of the inning, two Brewers players attempted to reach base via bunt. 37-year old Chris Martin, the pitcher, did not seem to appreciate the attempts.

The Milwaukee Brewers Have Been Involved in Four Benches Clearing Incidents

The interaction with the Red Sox with the fourth one of its kind that the Brewers have been involved in this season. The first, of course, happened on opening weekend when Rhys Hoskins slid hard into second base, upsetting Jeff McNeil. The two exchanged words and the benches cleared, though no physical blows took place.

Interestingly, the next three bench-clearing instances involving Milwaukee all involve American League East teams. The next one took place against the Baltimore Orioles when Willy Adames and James McCann exchanged words.

The only bench-clearing incident that led to actual blows came at American Family Field against the Tampa Bay Rays when relief pitcher Abner Uribe took a swing at outfielder Jose Siri.

This latest dust up with the Red Sox leaves just the New York Yankees in the division who have not had words with Milwaukee. Fortunately, they played their lone series of the year already this season.
