FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Fargo Police officers have been approved to go on a trip to Milwaukee, where they were requested to assist with crowd management and to police the Republican National Convention in July.

Fargo Police Chief David Zibolski said 15 officers were requested, and all their costs, overtime, and benefits would be reimbursed by the State of Wisconsin.

Some city commissioners had questions about the move. Commissioners Denise Kolpack and Deputy Mayor Arlette Preston expressed concerns about the current lack of staffing with Fargo Police to help with things like traffic enforcement and safety concerns, and whether the city could afford (from a staffing standpoint) to send officers out of state.

Zibolski said staffing was rearranged for that week so that staffing wouldn’t be a problem. He also mentioned the benefits of the learning experience as well as the possibility of current Governor Doug Burgum being named Vice President as reasons for the trip.

City Commissioner John Strand said he feels we owe it to the country to be able to help with things like this.

The measure passed 4-1 with only Commissioner Kolpack voting against.
