July 16 – Freddy Peralta and three relievers combined on a one-hitter and the visiting Milwaukee Brewers used three solo home runs to record their third straight shutout over the Cincinnati Reds, 3-0, Saturday night.

Peralta (6-7) allowed only a one-out, broken-bat infield single by Jake Fraley in the fourth inning, striking out six while issuing two walks to record Milwaukee’s seventh win over Cincinnati in nine meetings this season.

For the second straight night, Elvis Peguero, Joel Payamps and Devin Williams each threw a scoreless inning to complete the shutout, with Williams converting his 22nd save in 24 chances.

Saturday’s win allowed the Brewers to reclaim first place in the National League Central by a game over the Reds, who lost their third straight — all by shutouts to the Brewers.

The Brewers recorded their third straight shutout win for the first time since sweeping the Miami Marlins between July 19-21, 2013.

Cincinnati suffered a third straight shutout loss for the first time since being blanked in three straight by Pittsburgh and Milwaukee, April 3-5, 2019. The Reds had won 20 of 24 before beginning a six-game series with the Brewers before the All-Star break.

The Brewers came out aggressively against Cincinnati starter Andrew Abbott (4-2), as Christian Yelich drilled the game’s first pitch to the first row of seats in left for his 12th homer and a 1-0 Milwaukee lead.

William Contreras doubled Milwaukee’s lead to 2-0 with another solo opposite field homer, his 10th, to right field open the fourth inning.

Abbott struck out three and walked two while allowing just the three hits and two runs in six innings, giving Cincinnati its second straight quality start coming out of the All-Star break.

Owen Miller belted his fifth homer, a 405-foot shot to the upper deck in left, to open the seventh. Milwaukee’s third solo homer of the night off reliever Buck Farmer gave Milwaukee a three-run lead.

Milwaukee pitching continued its overpowering effort, striking out another 12 Cincinnati batters Saturday. The Brewers have fanned 30 batters in the two shutout wins since the All-Star break.
