Armed robberies near UW-Milwaukee; 4 incidents in 2 days
MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee police are investigating a string of armed robberies near the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). Four incidents took place between Sunday, Oct. 22 and Monday, Oct. 23 at or near bus stops.
Two of the armed robberies happened on Belleview Place in Milwaukee. Investigators say at least one person was hurt – and a gun was used in all the hold-ups.
On a beautiful fall Tuesday, students around UWM were focused on something a little more ugly.
“It doesn’t necessarily feel the safest to know that’s happening,” said Elyssa Koel, UWM student.
It all started around noon on Sunday when someone with a gun held up a person at a bus stop near Burleigh and Richards. The robber hit the victim and took off.
Hours later and just up the road at Port Washington and Capitol, two people were robbed at gunpoint at another bus stop.

The next day on E. Belleview, there were two more armed robberies. The suspect stole a victim’s car.
“I was surprised for it to be here because of how busy the street normally us,” Koel said.
Campus police sent out an alert to students.
Milwaukee police are investigating and say 12 robberies have occurred in District 1 in the last five days. That includes downtown Milwaukee and as far north as UWM.
“I don’t want to be anywhere by myself especially at night,” said Andrea Mongi, UWM student.
Students around campus say they are taking the alert seriously – walking with friends and carrying pepper spray.
“Once it hits like dusk, it’s like have a buddy,” said Jenny Herrera, UWM student.

UWM police will be adjusting patrols. They are asking students to be aware and report any suspicious behavior.
No arrests have been made in any of the armed robberies.
