Wastewater dashboard monitoring monkeypox, influenza, other viruses in 5 SE Michigan cities
(CBS DETROIT) – A wastewater dashboard that tracks pathogens is now monitoring monkeypox, influenza-A, norovirus GII and the respiratory syncytial virus in 5 Southeast Michigan cities.
The College of Michigan, which is gathering and testing water samples, is checking wastewater in Ann Arbor, Flint, Jackson, Tecumseh and Ypsilanti.

“By gaining access to this info, individuals could make knowledgeable choices about their habits if they’ve a private concern concerning the ranges of pathogens detected of their neighborhood,” undertaking co-leader Krista Wigginton, U-M affiliate professor of civil and environmental engineering, stated in a press release.
The Michigan Division of Well being and Human Companies funds the undertaking, which is a collaboration between researchers in civil and environmental engineering and public well being at U of M.
The undertaking, which is supported via 2024, has been monitoring neighborhood COVID-19 ranges in wastewater since 2021.
