Michigan man acquitted in Whitmer kidnapping plot running for sheriff
A man acquitted of having a supporting role in the plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said he’s running for county sheriff.
Eric Molitor filed papers to run against Wexford County Sheriff Trent Taylor in the Republican primary in August, The Detroit News reported Thursday.
He said he’s running on a pledge to not enforce a new state law that can take guns away from people who are alleged to be a danger to themselves or others.

Molitor and two other men were found not guilty of providing support for a terrorist act. They were accused of supporting leaders of the kidnap plot by participating in military-style drills and traveling to see Whitmer’s vacation home in 2020.
“This was a setup by the government,” Molitor said, referring to the many informants and undercover FBI agents used in the investigation.
Nine men were convicted at trial or through guilty pleas, and five were acquitted.
“Anybody can run for sheriff,” Taylor said in response to Molitor’s candidacy. “There are no set qualifications.”

Pistons’ playoff run ends in Game 7 blowout to Cavaliers
Detroit — For the eighth time in 10 seasons, the top seed in the Eastern Conference has failed to reach the NBA Finals.
The Detroit Pistons are the latest, after seeing their season end Sunday night with a 125-94 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals in front of a sellout crowd inside Little Caesars Arena.
BOX SCORE: Cavaliers 125, Pistons 94
The Pistons had their poorest performance of the season at a critical moment. Four players scored in double figures, with Daniss Jenkins leading the way with 17 points and five assists.
Cade Cunningham finished with a career-playoff low of 13 points on 5-for-16 shooting, 0-for-7 from behind the arc, to go along with five assists and four rebounds in 37 minutes. Duncan Robinson added 13 points off the bench, while Caris LeVert finished with 11, also off the bench.
Donovan Mitchell scored a game-high 26 points, adding eight assists and seven rebounds. However, much of the Cavaliers’ offensive success came from Jarrett Allen and Sam Merrill, who each scored 23 points. Merrill shot 5-for-8 from behind the arc, all coming within the first half.
The Cavaliers held a 64-47 halftime lead, and at one point, led by as many as 35 points.

Women were arguing over $50 debt before fatal Minneapolis apartment shooting, charges say
Charges say two women had been arguing over $50 when one of them fatally shot the other at a Minneapolis apartment earlier this month.
A 42-year-old Minneapolis woman was charged with second-degree murder for the May 9 shooting, according to the criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County on Friday.
Police were called to an apartment building located on the 2400 block of Pillsbury Avenue South, where they found a woman who had been shot. She later died at the hospital.
Officers spoke to a witness who rented the apartment where the shooting took place. He told police the victim and suspect had been over, along with an unknown man. The two women were allegedly arguing over $50.
The witness said that while he was in the bathroom, he heard the unknown man say “what are you doing?” before shots were fired, according to the complaint. He claims he saw the suspect with a gun earlier that day.
Both the suspect and the unknown man left the apartment before police arrived. Officers obtained survelliance video, which charges say showed a woman matching the suspect’s appearance leaving the apartment in a hurry shortly after the shooting.
Investigators found and interviewed the unknown man, who said the suspect and victim had been arguing over a debt when the suspect went into the bedroom and returned with a pistol. He says he told the suspect to stop, but she fired multiple shots at the victim anyway. He added that the suspect threatened him as they left the building, and he got away from her as soon as he could, according to charges.
The suspect originally denied any knowledge of the shooting, but eventually admitted to being at the apartment where it took place after being confronted with survelliance video images. She denied being involved in the shooting itself.
The suspect is currently in custody. Her bail has been set at $1 million.
