Special Olympics Kansas hosts State Basketball and Cheerleading Competitions
MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – More than 70 teams competed in Manhattan today for the Eastern wing of the Special Olympics Kansas.
Basketball and cheer squads representing 18 different organizations are running the courts in the Anthony and Eisenhower Rec Centers today and tomorrow. The Knights of Columbus sponsored the event that goes well beyond the results for its competitors.
”They enjoy everything that goes along with the tournament. The competition is important but there are a lot of athletes out here who enjoy the camaraderie of being with their friends and teammates even some of the teams they compete against they see at other events smaller regional events so like the athletes here in Manhattan will see some Topeka athletes that they’ve gotten to know over the years in different sports so they get to hang out,” said Tim Rehder, senior vice president of sports for Special Olympics Kansas.
The Western portion of events will take place next week in Hays.
