Kansas City Current host San Diego Wave FC in an NWSL regular season fixture that carries real weight at both ends of the table.

San Diego arrive as the league’s standout side, sitting top of the NWSL standings with 28 points. Jonas Eidevall’s team have been the most consistent outfit in the division through the first half of the season, though they head into this match on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Angel City FC — a result that ended their winning run but left their lead at the summit intact.

Kansas City sit sixth in the table with 24 points, level with Gotham FC and Utah Royals in a congested mid-table cluster. Chris Armas’s side have shown they can mix it with the best, but their form has been uneven. A 3-0 loss to Orlando Pride on July 11 was a setback after back-to-back wins over Denver Summit and Boston Legacy.

The Current will be looking to use home advantage to apply pressure on a Wave side that, despite their league position, have shown they can be caught on the road. San Diego’s defeat in Los Angeles proved they are not untouchable.

This is a fixture with genuine stakes. Kansas City need points to stay in the race for a top-four finish, while San Diego will want to respond after their first defeat in several weeks.

A 4-year-old child died in a “tragic accident” last Thursday after being electrocuted by a clothes dryer, according to Kansas officials.

The incident happened in Savonburg, Kansas, while the child was “playing” inside a home, the Allen County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) said in a statement Saturday.

The child “allegedly received an electrical shock from a 220v dryer,” the sheriff’s office said.

The parents rushed their child, who was reportedly unconscious, to a local hospital around 9:30 p.m., according to authorities.

While clothes dryers have been linked to thousands of home fires annually, primarily caused by lint buildup blocking exhaust ducts or overheating electrical elements, electrical deaths involving major laundry appliances are considered extremely rare.

In one of the rare instances, a 10-year-old boy was found dead inside a dryer at a Houston-area apartment complex in 2018, according to Fox 5 DC.

A medical examiner determined the boy had been electrocuted, while investigators found no signs of injury or foul play.

In recognition of the important role farmers’ markets play in Kansas communities, Governor Laura Kelly proclaimed August as Kansas Farmers’ Market Month. In addition, Aug. 2-8 was also recognized as Kansas Farmers’ Market Week.

In both urban centers and rural communities, farmers’ markets give consumers access to fresh, locally grown produce and serve as an important link between food producers and consumers of Kansas products. Farmers’ markets also keep money in Kansas communities, which helps make small businesses stronger and positively contributes to local economies.

The number of farmers’ markets in Kansas has grown from 26 in 1987 to more than 116 registered farmers’ markets today. Farmers’ markets in Kansas can register with the Kansas Department of Agriculture as part of the state’s agricultural trademark program, From the Land of Kansas.

“We are excited about the growth and expansion of farmers’ markets across the state,” said Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. “Farmers’ markets serve as a great way for producers to connect directly with consumers and sell their products locally.”

KDA supports farmers’ markets by maintaining the Central Registration for Kansas Farmers’ Markets, which is shared with the public through an interactive map and market directory. KDA also provides educational resources through newsletters, workshops and webinars which help farmers’ markets across the state stay up to date with best practices including food safety regulations. KDA and From the Land of Kansas strive to serve Kansas farmers, ranchers, agribusinesses and consumers by expanding agricultural markets and providing support and assistance to help Kansas businesses grow.

Farmers’ markets are a vibrant part of many Kansas communities, and contribute to the health, well-being and quality of life for many Kansans. To locate a farmers’ market in your area, or to receive more information on how to register a farmers’ market please visit www.FromtheLandofKansas.com or email FromtheLandofKansas@ks.gov.
