National Commander of American Legion visits Iowa to discuss veteran mental health

VICTOR, Iowa (KCRG) -Dozens of veterans from across Eastern Iowa came together to welcome a special guest.

The National Commander of the American Legion, Daniel Seehafer visited Harold E Smith Post 54 in Victor as part of his nationwide tour.

He spoke about the work The American Legion is doing to bring down veteran suicide rates and help with mental health issues.

Victor’s Post 54 Commander Donald Craig, says it’s an issue they’ve seen firsthand.

“We’ve had some of that at our post level here where we’ve designated a member, or couple members that were veterans that were having some major issues and reached out to the state level and got them some help,” said Craig.

Seehafer will visit three cities in Iowa on February 16th, starting with the Meskwaki Hotel & Casino in Tama at 10 a.m.

He will then visit The Iowa Veterans Home at 1301 Summit St. in Marshalltown at 1:00 p.m.

Finally, he will stop at American Legion Post #661 at 21979 160th Ave. in Liberty Center, Iowa at 5:30 p.m.
