DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – State regulators are warning of a growing trend of fake online gambling websites.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC) and the Iowa Department of Public Safety have issued a warning about fake online gambling sites.

The IRGC says the scam involves sites claiming they’re licensed or will spoof casinos which are licensed in Iowa. The sites will promise bonuses and claim to be affiliated with Iowa’s regulated gaming industry.

The high interest in sports wagering during football season makes this warning particularly important.

Regulators say there are a few steps you can take to protect yourself:

  • Before you click, verify the operator’s license and website legitimacy on the IRCG’s website.
  • Stay informed on online gambling dangers to protect yourself and your loved ones.
  • Forward messages to spam.
  • File a police report if you feel threatened or if you had money stolen.
