Week 8 of the 2023 NFL season is in the books, and several former Cyclones contributed in a big way on the field.
Breece Hall continues to shine for the resilient New York Jets, now over .500 for the season despite losing Aaron Rodgers in Week 1. Elsewhere, ex-Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers are suddenly on a three-game losing streak after a 5-0 start.
Here’s how former Cyclones did in Week 8.
Breece Hall, New York Jets RB
The 13-10 win over the New York Giants was hardly pretty, but Hall still managed a strong day. The former Iowa State running back had just 17 rushing yards on 12 carries but added six catches for 76 yards and a touchdown.
The 50-yard scoring grab came in the first quarter and was the team’s only TD of the day. All of the Jets’ offensive players obviously expected to have Rodgers under center this season, but Hall and others have done a nice job of salvaging something.
Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers QB
Considered almost invincible just a few weeks ago, the 49ers have now dropped three straight after Sunday’s 31-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Purdy still had a decent day, going 22-for-31 passing for 365 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The former Iowa State quarterback was also San Francisco’s leading rusher with six carries for 57 yards. And that all happened after entering and clearing concussion protocol earlier in the week.
Purdy has finally looked human during his unprecedented start to his NFL career. Still, expect San Francisco to turn things around before season’s end.
