The Iowa Hawkeyes opened up their 2023 season with a 24-14 win over Utah State.

It got started off with several rapid fireworks.

New starting quarterback Cade McNamara connected with wide receiver Seth Anderson on a 36-yard touchdown strike on the game’s second play from scrimmage. That touchdown hookup represented some interesting history for Iowa.

It was the first time the Hawkeyes’ season-opening drive ended with a touchdown pass in the Kirk Ferentz era and the first time since the 1991 season. McNamara’s 36-yard touchdown pass to Anderson was also longer than any touchdown pass Iowa recorded last season.

The 6-foot-1, 205 pound quarterback from Reno, Nev., also took Iowa to pay dirt on its second drive, too. McNamara found Erick All for a 3-yard touchdown reception on fourth down.

After that, the offensive explosions were fewer and further in between. The Hawkeyes did tack on a 20-yard Drew Stevens field goal before halftime and a 3-yard touchdown run from star back Kaleb Johnson at the start of the fourth quarter.

Defensively, sophomore safety Xavier Nwankpa came away with his second career interception in his second career start. Senior linebacker Jay Higgins racked up a career-high 16 tackles to lead a defensive effort that surrendered just the lone mop-up touchdown and a pair of field goals.

There’s a number of takeaways from the game, but the largest is that Iowa is 1-0 and there are indeed signs of life offensively.
