The Iowa vs Iowa State wrestling dual started with a critical matchup at 125 lbs between #21 Drake Ayala of Iowa and #10 Kysen Terukina of Iowa State.

Ayala forced much of the action throughout the first period but was unable to secure a takedown. After an early escape in the second period for Terukina, Ayala continued to press the pace on his feet, finally earning a takedown at the end of the period. Terukina escaped again at the end of the period, and the two headed to the third with a 3-2 lead for Ayala.

An escape for Ayala made it a 4-2 lead for the Hawkeye. Terukina attacked late in the match, but it was Ayala securing another takedown to win the match 7-2.

Ayala actually began the season ranked ahead of Terukina, but last week, Ayala lost to Oregon State’s Brandon Kaylor while Terukina knocked off two-time Wisconsin All-American Eric Barnett to leap Ayala in the rankings. The rankings at 125 lbs will surely be turned on their heads once again after this weekend’s result.
