Public gets last chance to comment ahead of 2024 Indianapolis budget vote this month

The Indianapolis City-County Council held a full meeting Monday night, one of two planned this month. The meeting was the last chance for the public to comment on the proposed $1.5 billion city budget for 2024.
Two people showed up to comment on budget proposals for city operations and municipal corporations, which include Indy Go and the Indianapolis Public Library. Larry Vaughn, who ran for the mayor’s office in the May primaries, spoke against all of the proposals.
The budget includes a record funding amount of $323 million for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Additional budgetary funding will increase city infrastructure spending to $1.2 billion over five years. The council will take a final vote on the budget in two weeks.
Another new proposal introduced to the council allocates $125 million in city bonds to fund the Blue Line. Indianapolis’s third bus rapid transit project will also receive federal funding.
