IU Kelley School of Business Grad Turns Idea into National Business
Richard Hall came up with the idea of bringing his custom suit business to Indy after learning the ropes of the industry in China.
Hall, the co-owner of Hall Madden, says his business idea came after he spent several years in China working in a construction export trade office in Shanghai. The business he started 15 years ago has now grown into a nationwide company with 10 locations across the country. Hall says the business started with only $500.
Hall says the company’s growth really took off when he moved the business out of China. When he began to hold private fitting appointments for customers, the attention to detail increased the value to his buyers. He says many customers come in looking for a new suit for a wedding or event.
One Important business trait Hall focuses on is never giving up. “It’s all about persistence,” he tells business owners to keep a low overhead and focus on the quality of their staff. He says to build a “culture of expertise.”
Hall says the recent national tariff drama with China is not much of a concern because he recently moved the production of his suits out of China and into India and Italy. He encourages business owners who are currency having their products produced in China to “explore other options.”
Hall is looking to open showrooms in Carmel, Indiana, and Chicago.
