Indiana's 2023 graduation rate is the second-highest in over a decade

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) —  The Indiana Department of Education released the 2023 state graduation rates, indicating a noteworthy surge.

According to IDOE, graduation rates have jumped to 88.98%, up from 86.52% in 2022. 

Governor Holcomb told the IDOE about the significance of high school diplomas, stating, “Earning a high school diploma is essential to unlocking a successful future.” 

He also commended the efforts of educators post-pandemic, emphasizing their role in preparing students for success beyond high school. Data showed the 2023 statewide graduation rate increased by nearly 2.5 percentage points, marking the second-highest since Indiana began collecting data in 2012.

While the peak was in 2016 at 89.1%, this year’s achievement is a close 0.12 percentage points behind.

Key highlights from the 2023 graduation data include positive trends across various student groups: 

• Black students saw a notable increase from 77.52% in 2022 to 82.43% in 2023. 

• Hispanic students improved from 83.86% to 86.41%.  

• English learners rose from 85.60% to 87.72%.  

• Students in special education witnessed a substantial increase from 76.39% to 83.24%. 

• Students receiving free and reduced-price meals climbed from 83.74% to 88.74%. 

 The non-waiver graduation rate saw a significant boost from 80.58% in 2022 to 84.92% in 2023, reflecting a 4.34 percentage point improvement. 

Dr. Katie Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education, expressed future goals to enhance the state’s diploma rigor and create seamless pathways for students as they pursue employment, enrollment, or enlistment. In addition to state rates, IDOE also released the 2023 federal graduation rate at 87.52%, acknowledging variations between federal and state accountability equations and standards.
