Historic Indy property once home to Swain Sanitorium goes up for sale. See inside.

A historic home with an interesting past is back on the market in Indianapolis.

The 11-bedroom home in Woodruff Place was built in 1898 and boasts more than 7,000 total sq ft of space.

On the market for $575,000, the property was once home to the Swain Sanitorium opened by Dr. Rachel Swain as a way to help women through better diet, exercise and natural medicines.

Dr. Swain was a highly-educated Hoosier native, published author and studied abroad in Parisian hospitals before opening the facility, according to Historic Indianapolis.

The home today

The house has undergone many changes over the decades, including being split into apartments, and being nearly destroyed by a fire before a buyer renovated and recovered the property.

Today you’ll find detailed woodwork throughout the house, exposed brickwork and arches and even a dumbwaiter that travels to all five levels of the home.
