INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Firefighters rescued two people from a smoke-filled apartment building in downtown Indianapolis on Monday.

Crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department responded just after 8:30 a.m. to a fire at The Harrison, 1320 N. Delaware St. The six-story apartment building is roughly 500 feet north of the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site.

Firefighters found two people trapped on the upper floors and helped them to safety. At least five other residents were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, according to IFD.

The fire started on the first floor. The exact cause of the fire is unclear, but crews at the scene told News 8 that improper use of smoking material might be to blame.
