A construction worker killed in an accident near downtown Indianapolis early Saturday was identified as 38-year-old Luis Alberto Orozco Gonzalez by the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
Gonzalez was part of a crew removing a small stretch of the former people mover tracks along Senate Avenue at IU Health Methodist Hospital when he was killed, according to the hospital system.
The project began a few weeks ago and a section of the track fell, causing Gonzalez’s death. Police were called to the scene at the intersection of West 16th Street and North Senate Avenue just before 5 a.m.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of this valued construction worker,” a statement from IU Health reads. “We extend our condolences to the family and coworkers during this difficult time.”
What led to the track collapse is under investigation. The section of 16th Street between Missouri Street and Senate Avenue remains closed as the investigation continues.
The Indiana Department of Labor’s IOSHA division has opened a safety-compliance inspection into the man’s death. An update on the inspection is expected in 2-3 months.
