Colts to visit Eagles for joint training camp practices

The Indianapolis Colts will be involved in joint training camp practices with two teams during the preseason—the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles.

It was earlier reported that the Colts will be hosting the Bears for joint training camp practices leading up to the Aug. 19 preseason game.

However, head coach Shane Steichen announced a bit of surprising news Friday that the team will travel to Philly as well for joint practices before the preseason finale on Aug. 24.

The dates have yet to be announced, but it’s likely that the two practices will be held on the Wednesday and Thursday before each preseason game.

“I think competing, especially in training camp – I think it breaks camp up for players to go compete against another opponent,” Steichen said Friday. “Obviously, you have these long days in practice and training camp. Just to go compete (against) another opponent in practice is a good break up for camp. Then obviously going to Philly, we’re playing there in the preseason so we’re going to do them there.”

This is the first time since moving to Indianapolis that the Colts will have joint training camp practices with more than one team.

The connection with the Eagles is obvious as Steichen spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator under head coach Nick Sirianni, who spent 2018-2020 as the offensive coordinator for the Colts.

The Colts have been hosting a team for joint training camp practices for the majority of Chris Ballard’s tenure as general manager. That hasn’t changed with Shane Steichen taking over as the new head coach.

The only season the Colts haven’t done so was during 2020 when the pandemic limited what teams could do.

This should lead to a very physical preseason as teams typically only hold joint training camp practices with one team so it will be interesting to see if this winds up helping or hurting the team.

Regardless, there will be plenty of action to look forward to when August rolls around.
