INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A significant winter storm is forecasted to impact Indiana this weekend, with snow expected to begin on Saturday afternoon and continue into Sunday.

Winter storm watches, issued Wednesday, call for everything from a light glaze of ice, sleet, and snowfall from 4-13 inches from Saturday morning through late Sunday night for parts of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. The watches include these counties in southern Indiana: Clark, Crawford, Dubois, Floyd, Gibson, Harrison, Jefferson, Ohio, Orange, Perry, Pike, Posey, Scott, Spencer, Switzerland, Vanderburgh, Warrick and Washington.

The winter storm watches suggest significant snowfall could particularly affect southern Indiana, leaving open the possibility for a serious snow event in central regions.

The impending winter weather system is characterized by considerable uncertainty regarding snow totals and overall impacts. While areas south of Interstate 70 have a higher likelihood of accumulating several inches of snow, the exact amounts remain undetermined.

Snow is anticipated to move into Indiana sometime on Saturday afternoon, creating potential travel disruptions through the weekend.

Although predictions indicate the potential for heavy snowfall, there remains a worst-case scenario for a widespread severe snowstorm impacting central Indiana. Weather forecasters caution that details may change on Thursday and Friday, as evolving conditions could alter the storm’s trajectory.

Throughout the weekend and into early next week, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with wind chill values potentially falling below zero for extended periods. Residents should be prepared for frigid conditions accompanying any major snowfall events.
