INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Environmental Management are urging Hoosiers to take precautions when they are outside on Thursday.

According to a news release from IDEM, the department has forecast an Air Quality Action Day on Thursday in four regions throughout the state.

Ozone levels are expected to be in the unhealthy for sensitive groups range (orange) in the following Indiana regions:

  • Central/East Central Indiana, including Bloomington, Columbus, Indianapolis, Kokomo and Muncie
  • Southeast Indiana, including Jeffersonville, Madison, New Albany, Salem and Versailles
  • Southwest Indiana, including Evansville, Mount Vernon, Rockport and Vincennes
  • Western/West Central Indiana including Delphi, Lafayette, Monticello and Terre Haute.

The release said that continuing high temperatures, along with modest humidity, could cause the ozone levels to reach that orange level. Because of the ongoing high temperatures and humidity, the city of Indianapolis has released the hours of its cooling centers for Thursday. Information surrounding cooling centers can be found here.

Air Quality Action Days are in effect from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on the specified date. For more information about Air Quality Action Days and recommended actions, click here.
