EUGENE, Ore. — Indiana basketball guard Trey Galloway got the starting nod against Oregon on Tuesday night in his 138th game to break the program’s career games played record.

The fifth-year guard surpassed the mark that Yogi Ferrell set in 2015.

Galloway, who is also nearing the 1,000-point milestone (973), is averaging 8.0 points and 4.5 assists per game this season. He’s played big minutes during the Hoosiers’ recent push to reach the NCAA Tournament with three straight wins and four wins in their past five games.

“It’s a testament to him as a player for him to come in as a freshman and produce as a freshman all the way up to a fifth-year senior, go through two head coaches and go through all the ups and downs this program has been through the past the five years,” IU forward Luke Goode said after IU’s win over Washington. “It’s a testament to him as a person and a player, all his teammates love him and he’s a good player that’s helped win a lot of games.”

Galloway was part of former coach Archie Miller’s final signing class in 2020 as a four-star guard out of The Culver Academies. He earned Miller’s trust as a freshman — he started seven games — and did the same when Mike Woodson took over.

Woodson was in Galloway’s corner earlier this season when the guard went through a shooting slump and was booed during a 94-69 loss to Illinois.

“He’s had his ups and downs, but, hey, I’m willing to go to war with him every time he steps out on the floor,” Woodson said earlier this year.

That’s why Woodson put Galloway back in the starting lineup for IU’s final stretch of games and played him big minutes in the second half. He’s averaged 10.0 points and 6.4 minutes over the Hoosiers’ past five games while helping the Hoosiers knock off multiple ranked opponents.

Galloway told reporters after IU’s win over Penn State that he’s proud of the way his team has rallied together. He’s currently one of just two active Big Ten players (Braden Smith) with at least 950 points, 400 assists, 300 rebounds and 100 steals in their career.

“I think we’re coming together and we know we’re a better team than we’ve shown,” Galloway said. “And we still have a chance and we’re fighting for a spot in the tournament and we’re fighting for just getting better and pushing our record in the Big Ten.”
