ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) – The Elkhart Chapter of the Indiana Black Expo held its 8th annual “Trailblazer Awards” ceremony on Monday night.

The ceremony was held at Elkhart High School. Over 130 African American students were honored for being the top students at their schools.

This year, Jaya Johnson was honored with the Garvin Roberson Student Athlete of the Year award. Johnson, a senior at Elkhart High School, has a 3.0 GPA, plays basketball, runs track, and marches in the band.

“It was just phenomenal to see so many young people and their families, some of the educators, the mayor of Elkhart here celebrating the incredible academic achievement,” says Karrah Herring, Indiana’s chief equity, inclusion and opportunity officer. “To me, that’s what it’s all about. We have to highlight that more.”
