Cold front brings rain and snow showers to central Indiana | Mar. 5, 2025
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A powerful low-pressure system brings 40 mph gusts, showers, and a late switch to snow today in central Indiana. Plus, a big warmup next week.
Wednesday:
A massive wound-up system continues to march through the Midwest this morning. Much of central Indiana is entering what is called the dry slot, with a heavy shield of rain sliding north and east of our state. Partial clearing is taking place over parts of Illinois and Indiana this morning.
As we await the low to move over the Midwest, a trough digging through on the southern end of the surface low could bring a few scattered showers and even a rumble of thunder as we head into the morning and afternoon hours. Temperatures will slide gradually as we go throughout the day today in the wake of the cold front moving through. We have likely already reached our high for the day today, which occurred shortly after midnight. Numbers will likely slide into the lower 40s as we head into the afternoon hours.
As we move into the afternoon and temperatures continue to rapidly cool, any lingering moisture on the back end of this area of low pressure could either mix with or completely change over to light snow showers. Snow chances then continue until later this evening. Very little, if any, accumulation is expected.
Wednesday night:
Snow will wind down shortly after midnight, leaving us partly cloudy and colder overnight with lows near 30. Meanwhile, it should be noted that it will be another blustery day with gusts near 40 mph. This will be similar to Tuesday and just below wind advisory criteria.
Thursday:
Thursday should be a relatively quiet day, although breezy at times. High pressure will settle in, ushering in cold air advection along with lots of sunshine. High temperatures will top out in the upper 30s and lower 40s.
Friday:
An upper-level wave will quickly hit the state on Friday. It appears we could see some light snow showers for the northern third of the state on Friday morning. By Friday afternoon and evening, chilly rain showers will move through the state.
Meanwhile, temperatures will only top out in the mid-40s for Friday afternoon.
This weekend:
The weekend looks pretty quiet with warming temperatures. It will still be seasonably chilly for Saturday under mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and highs in the mid-40s. Numbers should jump to the lower 50s under partly cloudy skies for Sunday.
Warming up next week:
The next thing next week is where things really turn more spring-like. Pretty quiet conditions as we open up the week on Monday with partly cloudy skies and highs near 60. We could make a legit run to near 70° temperatures on Tuesday, which would rival the warmest of the year thus far. The long-range pattern keeps us above average for much of next week.
