One person killed in crash outside of Springfield

One person was killed in a car crash outside of Springfield Monday morning.

Illinois State Police said the crash happened at the intersection of Illinois 29 and East Hartgrave Street, just outside of Athens.

Karen Fox, 70, of Athens, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Menard County Chief Deputy Sheriff and Coroner Ben Hollis on the department’s Facebook page late Monday afternoon.

Hollis said an autopsy has been scheduled.

There’s been no word of any other injuries as of Monday evening.

Northbound traffic was re-routed through Athens for several hours.

The crash remains under investigation by ISP. In addition to the sheriff’s department, Athens police and fire crews assisted at the scene.
