Iowa’s Grassley, Illinois’ Sorensen react to Trump’s tariffs
QUAD CITIES, Iowa and Ill. (KWQC) – Illinois and Iowa lawmakers are reacting to President Trump’s new tariffs.
The majority of Republicans backed President Trump’s new tariffs but Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is still unsure if the tariffs will work. He even went as far to say he wouldn’t be afraid of telling the President he was wrong if this doesn’t work.
“I am a free and fair trader,” Grassley said. “If President Trump is successful in reducing tariffs in other countries, I’m going to say amen, praise the lord, but if he’s unsuccessful, I’ll say I told you so.”
Illinois Representative Eric Sorensen called out the tariffs as a tax on people who never signed up for a trade war.
He specifically called out his plans to try and create exceptions for products that our local companies need to survive.
“I’ll be calling out these tariffs every day that they remain in place,” Sorensen said. “I am working on carve-outs for raw materials and the things that Arconic, Deere and Company and Caterpillar and Rivian need to survive, and I will do everything I can to get rid of this tax that’s on you.”
