Illinois trout fishing season opens for 58 locations on April 1

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KFVS) – The 2024 Illinois spring trout fishing season will be opened to the public on Saturday, April 6 at 58 various ponds, lakes and streams throughout the state.

In southern Illinois. you can fish for trout at:

  • Jefferson County – Mount Vernon Game Farm Pond
  • Johnson County – Ferne Clyffe State Park Lake
  • Massac County – Fairgrounds Pond, Fort Massac State Park

According to a release from the state, you can choose a trout site at an earlier date, on Saturday, March 23. No trout will be allowed to keep during the catch-and-release period. The limit of trout caught per angler is five a day.

For more information about site regulations, anglers should contact sites that will contain trout, since not all sites are open for catch-and-release season and open at 5 a.m. opening day.
