Illinois ranks 2nd highest in number of tornadoes so far this year in the US

QUAD CITIES, Iowa/Ill. (KWQC) – It has been a relatively active start to the severe weather season in eastern Iowa and western Illinois.

Both Iowa and Illinois are seeing an above-average start to the season.

Iowa has had 15 tornadoes so far this season, all of which occurred during the severe weather outbreak on April 16.

Illinois, on the other hand, has had 40 preliminary reports of tornadoes so far this year, trough April 22.

Nationally, there have been 348 preliminary reports of tornadoes. The running average-to-date from 2005-2023 is about 404, so the nation is running slightly lower than average, but pretty on-course in the spring season.
