A 58-year-old man died early Saturday while driving the wrong way on the Lodge Freeway, colliding with a DDOT bus, according to Michigan State Police.
In a post on X, the Michigan State Police said the man, driving a Ram pickup, struck the bus head-on while driving northbound in the southbound lane. The crash took place near Log Cabin Street in Detroit.
According to police, the truck caught fire immediately. The driver was pronounced dead on the scene. As of Saturday morning, the family has not been identified.
The bus driver was injured, too, and was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
“At this time it hasn’t been determined where the wrong way driver entered the freeway and why they were going the wrong way,” Shaw said.
