Storm damages buildings, causes uprooted trees and downed powerlines in metro Detroit

Storm causes damage throughout metro Detroit

A storm passing through metro Detroit has caused several uprooted trees, collapsed roofs, and power outages on Wednesday, April 17.

FOX 2 (WJBK) – A storm passing through southeast Michigan caused extensive destruction on Wednesday, leaving behind a lot of debris.

Several trees have been uprooted, buildings have been damaged, and downed power lines have been reported – causing power outages in several areas.

According to DTE’s outage map, over 17,000 homes are currently without power. To check the outage map, visit outage.dteenergy.com/map.

A family in Washington Township was among those left cleaning up after the fast moving storms. Their home was hit by flying metal after the storm destroyed a neighbor’s metal carport.

In Ferndale, several buildings were affected by the storm – including a restaurant called Voyager on Vester Street, and an apartment complex on Nine Mile near Paxton Street.

At the apartment complex, a tarp appeared to be covering part of the building.

One block over, on Paxton and Seratoga streets, the area saw several downed large trees and power lines. Crews were on the scene Wednesday afternoon, chopping the trees up to clear them.

“This is the third year in a row that we’ve had this kind of vicious storms and major trees toppling,” said Ferndale resident John Daquila.

In Shelby Township, residents were also left with downed trees and power lines on Roland Street, in the area of Auburn and Woodall roads.

No injuries were reported.

4Warn Weather – Overnight showers have left behind damp and dreary conditions this Tuesday morning.

We’re starting off well above average with lows on either side of 60 degrees. Today will be slightly cooler, but still on the warm side.

Clouds will give way to sunshine today. It will be dry and breezy with highs in the low 70s.

Wind gusts will be out of the west and will peak around 20 mph this afternoon.

Tonight’s sunset is at 8:32 p.m.

Expect mostly clear skies with lows around 50 degrees tonight.

Even warmer Wednesday

Temperatures will rebound close to 80 degrees on Wednesday, paired with plenty of sunshine.

Wednesday would be a great car wash day. Our next best chance for rain arrives Friday.

We’ll stay in the 70s through the weekend and into early next week.

(WXYZ) — East Lansing-based Anderson Economic Group says their revised forecast projects the net impact of the 2024 NFL Draft has on Downtown Detroit is expected to exceed $165 million.

“When we approach economic impact analysis, we carefully consider each dollar that is going to be invested or spent due to the event. We also carefully consider the power of that dollar in the region and industry of study as it is re-spent,” said Tyler Theile, chief operating officer and director of economic analysis at AEG, in a news release.

“The record number of attendees at the NFL draft in Detroit creates additional economic impact, and our original attendance estimate was within 10 percent of actual turnout,” said Theile. “Hosting the NFL draft was an exciting win for Detroit and presented invaluable opportunities for the city to showcase its culture on a national stage, fostering long-term tourism and investment prospects.”

AEG says their estimate includes both direct investment and spending that generates economic impact, as well as economic activity. It includes both expenditures inside and outside of the event in Detroit, including hotel stays, spending at restaurants and bars, and merchandise purchases.
