Popular Detroit sports columnist announces stage 4 cancer diagnosis
Longtime Detroit sports radio host and columnist Pat Caputo has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, he announced Monday.
Caputo, a host on Detroit’s 97.1 The Ticket, last published a column on Nov. 7. On Monday, he explained the reason behind his absence.
“For those wondering where I’ve been: I have been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, commonly referred to as a “death sentence” and had two other serious ailments which put me in ICU for several days,” Caputo wrote in a post to X. “It was sudden. I’ve literally been on my back for weeks. Bless you all.”
Caputo, 66, became a well-known personality in Detroit sports media during his time as an award-winning columnist for The Oakland Press from 1983-2020, according to the Detroit Free Press. He also was previously part of WXYT’s “Evening Sports” broadcast, and is an official voter for the Baseball Hall of Fame and college football’s Heisman Trophy award, according to his X bio.
Caputo is nicknamed “The Book” for his impressive memory retaining sports stats and information, according to FOX 2 in Detroit, where he has been a regular guest on its “Sports Works” broadcast.
Caputo’s social media announcement regarding his health drew support from fellow sports media professionals, including Brad Galli, sports director at WXYZ Detroit, and ESPN’s Dan Wetzel and Dave Pasch.
“Pat, we’re praying for [you],” Galli wrote. “Awful awful awful to read this, man. God bless you.”
“Legend. Stay strong my friend. So much support out here for you,” Wetzel posted.
“Book, praying for you my friend. So sorry to hear this,” Pasch wrote.

Car crashes through Detroit Metro Airport’s McNamara Terminal
DTW McNamara Terminal entrance damaged after car crashes through doors
Crews work to repair an entrance to Detroit Metro Airport’s McNamara Terminal after a car drove into the terminal on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026.
Officials are investigating after a car drove through the entrance to Detroit Metro Airport’s McNamara Terminal on Friday, Jan. 23.
The crash took place about 7:30 p.m. Friday and the vehicle hit a ticket counter, the Wayne County Airport Authority said in a statement.
The driver was taken into custody, officials said. Six people were also treated by the authority’s fire department.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
Whatever the cause, it made a terrifying noise, said Michele Wheaton, 54, of Pontiac.
Wheaton said she’d just flown back in from a trip to Puerto Rico with loved ones on Friday evening when the crash happened.
She was on her way to the arrivals area to be picked up when she heard a loud bang with sounds of metal and glass, she said.
“I stopped and looked around like, ‘Did anyone hear this?’” she said. “’Cause you heard the loud crash and then you just heard people screaming.”
Wheaton saw apparent security officers running, she said. One yelled, saying a car had crashed into the Delta area and asking if anyone had called 911.
Her luggage already in hand, Wheaton booked it out of the building and to her ride, she said. She told her mom to drive away.
Though specifics of the incident have not been released, Wheaton expressed sorrow at the events of the evening and dangerous incidents that take place in public gathering spots.
“It’s so sad that you can’t travel, that you can’t go to the movies or your churches or your grocery stores,” she said.
Video circulating online following the incident showed a man in an apparent Detroit Lions jersey being taken into custody.
The airport authority’s police department is investigating.
Workers could be seen still working to clean around broken entrance doors about 10:15 p.m. Friday evening.

Detroit Tigers scheduled for 16 national TV games in 2026
Detroit Tigers fans impacted by regional sports network struggles
On “Days of Roar,” The Athletic senior writer Evan Drellich details the struggles of regional sports networks – and the impact on Detroit Tigers fans.
Fresh off a second-straight playoff appearance, the Detroit Tigers are a more attractive team for national television appearances than they have been in recent years.
With the release of Fox’s national MLB television schedule on Thursday, Jan. 22, and the release of TBS’s first-half national MLB television schedule on the same day, we have a good (but not complete) list of when the Tigers will be appearing on national TV in the 2026 regular season.
Nationally-televised games on Fox and TBS should be familiar exercises for Tigers fans, but there will be a new broadcaster in the mix this season, with NBC and Peacock picking up the Sunday Leadoff and Sunday Night Baseball broadcasts. The Tigers will be featured on Sunday Night Baseball at least three times this season, with only the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres appearing more with four each.
Where Tigers fans will be able to catch the local broadcasts is still yet to be determined, with the team canceling its broadcasting deal with FanDuel Sports Network on Jan. 8. But we at least have clarity on the national broadcasts, even if local broadcasts with FanDuel remain up in the air.
Here’s what you need to know about where to catch the Tigers in 2026.
Detroit Tigers 2026 national TV broadcast schedule
The Tigers currently have 16 nationally-televised games for the upcoming 2026 season, though that number may grow as TNT Sports has yet to release its second-half schedule for Tuesday TBS broadcasts.
- Sunday, April 5: St. Louis Cardinals at Detroit Tigers, 7 p.m. ET (Peacock).
- Wednesday, April 8: Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins, 7:30 p.m. ET (FS1).
- Saturday, April 25: Detroit Tigers at Cincinnati Reds, 7 p.m. ET (Fox).
- Tuesday, April 28: Detroit Tigers at Atlanta Braves, 7 p.m. ET (TBS).
- Saturday, May 2: Texas Rangers at Detroit Tigers, 7 p.m. ET (Fox).
- Sunday, May 3: Texas Rangers at Detroit Tigers, 7 p.m. ET (Peacock).
- Sunday, May 10: Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals, 7 p.m. ET (Peacock).
- Tuesday, May 12: Detroit Tigers at New York Mets, 7 p.m. ET (TBS).
- Monday, May 18: Cleveland Guardians at Detroit Tigers, 6:30 p.m. ET (FS1).
- Tuesday, June 16: Detroit Tigers at Houston Astros, 8 p.m. ET (TBS).
- Tuesday, June 30: Detroit Tigers at New York Yankees, 7 p.m. ET (TBS, also available on Tigers local broadcast).
- Sunday, July 5: Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers, 3:30 p.m. ET (Peacock).
- Saturday, Aug. 8: Detroit Tigers at San Francisco Giants, 7 p.m. ET (Fox).
- Saturday, Aug. 22: Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals, 7 p.m. ET (Fox).
- Monday, Aug. 24: Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers, 6:30 p.m. ET (FS1).
- Saturday, Sept. 5: Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Guardians, 7 p.m. ET (Fox).
The Tigers will play on three Sunday Night Baseball broadcasts, all on Peacock, plus five Saturday night broadcasts on Fox.
