Man pleads guilty to buying gun used to kill Detroit cop

DETROIT (AP) — A 26-year-old man accused of shopping for a gun used within the deadly July taking pictures of a Detroit police officer faces as much as two years in federal jail after pleading responsible within the case.

Sheldon Avery Thomas, 26, pleaded responsible Monday to creating a false assertion within the acquisition of a firearm — a weapon that was used to shoot and kill Officer Loren Courts, 40, throughout a ambush on Detroit’s west facet.

Thomas, who faces as much as two years in jail, is scheduled to be sentenced March 29 in federal courtroom in Detroit, The Detroit Information reported.

Thomas’ responsible plea comes 5 months after he charged for allegedly shopping for a pistol from an Eastpointe gun supplier. Prosecutors mentioned he purchased the pistol for his buddy, Ehmani Davis, 19, who was not allowed to buy a weapon due to his legal historical past.

Police mentioned Davis fatally shot Courts on July 6 throughout an ambush as Courts and his companion had been responding to a report of a person firing a weapon.

Davis opened fireplace by the closed window of his house unit and a bullet struck Courts within the neck as he sat in a squad automotive, police mentioned.

One other officer fatally shot Davis as Courts’ companion was rendering medical help to the wounded officer.
