Larkin scores 200th goal and Red Wings beat Golden Knights
Detroit — The Detroit Red Wings took advantage of a team playing the second game of a back-to-back, beating the Vegas Golden Knights, 5-2, Saturday night at Little Caesars Arena.
In the opening period, captain Dylan Larkin got the Red Wings on the board first, finishing off a nice tic-tac-toe passing play from linemates Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond at 5:04.
The goal was the 200th of Larkin’s career.
Less than two minutes later, defenseman Jake Walman made it a 2-0 lead with a slap shot from the left point that eluded Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson.
The Golden Knights, who beat the New York Rangers Friday night, quickly answered the bell.
Ivan Barbashev pushed a rebound past Wings goalie Alex Lyon, who was out of position after making the initial save.
Then a pair of Michigan natives conspired to tie the game as Rochester Hills native Alec Martinez’s shot from the left point deflected off of Canton native Paul Cotter past Lyon, tying the game at 2-2 at 10:55.
BOX SCORE: Red Wings 5, Golden Knights 2
A late first-period power play restored the Wings’ lead as Joe Veleno beat Thompson at 18:17.
Moritz Seider, who assisted on the goals by Walman and Veleno, hit the 100-assist milestone in his 213th career game.
Andrew Copp scored his 10th goal of the season at 11:47 of the third off a nice feed from Michael Rasmussen.
Larkin added an empty-net goal at 18:30 to complete the scoring.
Alex Lyon made 28 saves and improved to 13-6-1.
