Detroit Youth Choir’s Disney+ series debuts Wednesday, screening set for DIA Saturday
The uplifting and joyful Detroit Youth Choir is no stranger to television, as we know, but now the local ensemble is getting ready for their big streaming debut.
“Choir” is a six-part docuseries about the DYC and director Anthony White as they work towards a big performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
All episodes will premier on Disney+ Wednesday, but local fans can get a sneak peek of the first episode at a screening 2 p.m. Saturday at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The event is free with general admission and includes a post-screening question and answer session and a performance by the choir.
The Detroit Youth Choir started many years ago, but it wasn’t until a fruitful 2019 appearance on “America’s Got Talent” that the group became a well-known name in the city and nationally. Since taking second place on the reality competition show, the nonprofit group has been everywhere, performing at Orchestra Hall, charity galas, movie theaters and halftime shows.

“(Disney) is going to take it to the next level,” White told The Detroit News last year. “What other youth choir in the country have a docuseries made by Blumhouse? It’s crazy. The crew that filmed became like family to us … they were just hanging out in rehearsal, hanging out at Carnegie Hall with us.”
The six-episode arc of “Choir” follows the kids as they perform at the Detroit Institute of Arts and audition to be part of the 50-singer group that will go on to dazzle them at Carnegie. The series not only follows the choir and its performances, but focuses on the drama of the school-aged kids as they ponder balancing after-school activities and growing into older teenagers.
