Detroit City FC beats New Mexico United, 1-0, on Rodriguez penalty kick
Detroit City FC got an early break Saturday night, capitalized on it and made it stand up for a crucial 1-0 victory over New Mexico United in a United Soccer League Championship match at Hamtramck.
Maxi Rodriguez scored on a penalty kick in the 20th minute and DCFC kept its hold on fourth place in the Eastern Conference, which was threatened by a 3-1 victory for Indy Eleven over El Paso Locomotive FC.
The pivotal moment in the match came in the 19th minute, when Laurent Kissiedou broke down the left side and attempted a crossing pass, which struck the right hand of Anthony Herbert.
Rodriguez converted the penalty with a boot to the lower left corner, and the lead held for the rest of the match.
Detroit keeper Carlos Saldaña parried away New Mexico’s best chance of the first half with a diving stop of a shot by Zico Bailey in injury time.
Ben Morris nearly doubled the DCFC lead in the 64th minute when a took a breakout pass and broke in on keeper Alex Tambakis, who made an impressive save to keep the lead a goal.
Saldaña came up big again in the 68th, when he stopped a point-blank shot off the toe of Marlon Vargas.
The best chance the rest of the way came when Stephen Carroll’s shot was toe-saved by Tambakis in the 6th minute of injury time. New Mexico had one last chance to level it three minutes later with a corner kick but with DCFC players packed into the goal crease it could not get a dangerous shot off.
DCFC’s lead over Indy is two points for fourth place and the final home playoff game in the first round, with Indy holding one game in hand. The Tampa Bay Rowdies are four points ahead of Detroit (11-8-9) in third place.
New Mexico is 16-8-3, in first place in the Western Conference.
DCFC will remain at home for next weekend’s match, this one a Sunday afternoon fixture against Louisville City FC. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.
At least three people are injured after separate weekend shootings across Detroit as of Saturday night.
According to police, a man on the 20600 block of West Eight Mile Road assaulted another man before firing shots on Saturday around 3:04 p.m. Officials said the man shot was grazed by at least one bullet and the suspected shooter was arrested. A weapon was recovered by law enforcement at the scene.
Roughly 40 minutes after the shooting on Eight Mile Road, a man was shot and had his vehicle stolen on the 19300 block of Rosemont Avenue, according to police. The man was sitting inside his gray Chevrolet Equinox when an unknown individual approached with a gun and demanded money.
Officials said the man in the Chevrolet was shot after he exited his vehicle. He was taken to the hospital and, as of Saturday night, is in stable condition. The individual who approached the man left the scene in the Equinox, according to police.
Just before 6 p.m. Saturday, a male teenager was shot while driving in the area of Woodward and West Hildale avenues, near Palmer Park, police said. According to officials, the teen, whose exact age has yet to be disclosed, was traveling in the area when an individual in another vehicle pulled alongside him and fired shots.
The teen was taken to the hospital. As of Saturday night, he is also in stable condition, officials said.
Police have yet to disclose whether an arrest has been made in the shootings on Rosemont Avenue or near Palmer Park.
DETROIT – Hundreds of Detroiters ditched the paper application and showed up ready to work Saturday, demonstrating their trade skills live in front of contractors looking to hire — right outside Comerica Park.
More than 620 people turned out for the event, braving wet weather to complete a hands-on skills course designed to let job seekers prove what they could do on the spot.
“We’re out in the rain and we’re supporting the city of Detroit,” said Luke Harris, one of the job seekers who participated.
The rain didn’t slow anyone down. Determined applicants trudged through puddles to finish the skills course, performing directly in front of contractors scouting for new hires.
Guy Cohoon of Clark Contracting Services said he was looking for one thing above all else: “Anyone that wants to come in, work hard, and show up every day on time.”
Partners unite to put Detroiters to work
The event was organized by a coalition of local partners, including Olympia Development, the Detroit Tigers, the city of Detroit, and the Northern Midwest Regional Council of Carpenters.
Tom Lutz, executive secretary treasurer of the Northern Midwest Regional Council of Carpenters, said the goal is simple: open doors. “Getting those doors open and providing those opportunities is what we’re doing,” Lutz said.
Rian English-Barnhill, vice president of government and community affairs for Olympia Development, echoed that commitment. “We are all leaning in to put Detroiters to work,” she said.
For many attendees, the event represented more than just a job fair — it was a chance to change their trajectory.
“I don’t know if it’s a for sure opportunity, but it’s an opportunity,” said Markiest Doss, one of the job seekers who participated. “Just ready to upgrade in life.”

A 75-year-old Wixom man who was allegedly attacked by a DoorDash driver back in December has died from his injuries on May 16, his family says
Lloyd Poole’s stepdaughter, Lindsey Gonzalez, tells CBS Detroit that Poole and his wife had just gotten back from Ireland before this alleged attack, and they had plans to travel to Alaska.
“It stinks that basically my mom and his golden years of traveling and being retired was taken away by this man,” said Gonzalez.
“He had seven different brain surgeries during that time, numerous infections during that time. He ended up with pneumonia a couple times. It was just a downwhirl spiral since everything happened that night,” said Gonzalez.
Police say on Dec. 28, officers were called to the area of Barberry Circle and Windingway Drive for a report of a man lying unconscious in the roadway. Authorities say that 40-year-old Ryan Daniel Turner, a DoorDash driver, went to the police station and admitted to punching Poole after he was confronted for speeding through the neighborhood.
“The medical examiner did rule the cause of death as homicide by blunt force head trauma,” Gonzalez told CBS Detroit.
Records show that Turner was arraigned on one count of aggravated assault. He is due back in court for a pre-trial hearing. However, Poole’s family says they are frustrated that Turner is out on bond.
“I mean, he’s out on bond on house arrest on a tether, so he’s not going anywhere, but he’s still sitting out, and this happened to Lloyd,” said Gonzalez.
CBS News Detroit reached out to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, which says it is aware of Poole’s death. It is unclear if charges will be updated.
