Detroit, Ann Arbor snow totals: When the next round of snow will hit

Wednesday’s weather system was an overproducer for Southeast Michigan, stacking up more snow than expected last night and into this morning in Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties.

Some areas saw more than 6 inches of snow. And that was just the first leg of a three-part snow system that will have the Ann Arbor, Detroit and Thumb areas seeing even more snow between now and the end of the weekend.

The National Weather Service team in Detroit has put out a new map with the forecasted amounts:

“Cold this morning with lake effect snow showers tapering off into the afternoon,” the NWS said. “Accumulating snow expected late tonight into Friday with another round of lake effect snow Saturday into Saturday night.”

Here are some of the snowfall totals from Wednesday night into this morning:

• Ann Arbor: 6.5 inches
• White Lake in Oakland County: 6.3 inches
• Wyandotte: 6.2 inches
• Romulus: 6 inches
• Livonia: 5.5 inches
• Ortonville in Oakland County: 5 inches
• West Bloomfield: 5 inches
• Royal Oak: 4 inches
• Bad Axe: 3.5 inches

What’s Ahead: The NWS in Detroit says Southeast Michigan should expect much colder air today, with wind chills struggling to get above 10 degrees.

The next wave of snow tonight through Friday could bring up to 3 more inches of accumulation to some areas. The heaviest snow will likely fall in a swath from Howell to Ann Arbor to Pontiac.

Another round of snow is on tap for Saturday/Sunday as well.
