The marathon course covered both sides of the U.S.-Canada border, crossing the Detroit River twice from miles 3 to 8 via the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. More than 26,000 runners registered to participate in the marathon weekend’s eight races.

Last year, winner Mitch Klinger of Jackson covered the course in 2:22:51.

The record for male runners was set by Greg Meyer, who needed just 2:13:07 to best the 26.2-mile course in 1980.

For the first time, the Detroit Free Press Marathon included an Elite field, featuring more than 80 top runners from Michigan, Canada and North America. Winners of the men’s and women’s division each win $3,000; the handcycle winner takes home $600.
