Ohio State football’s leading rusher will not play against Maryland

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football went into its off week relatively healthy, but comes out of it missing a key offensive weapon.

Running back TreVeyon Henderson is listed as out for Saturday’s game against Maryland. Henderson rushed for 104 yards on 14 carries against Notre Dame on Sept. 23. He was not known to be suffering from an injury at the end of that game.

Ohio State’s status report does not differentiate between absences for injuries, illness, discipline or other reasons. Henderson is the only usual starter who appears on the list for Saturday’s game.

Henderson did come out to the field for some initial stretching and basic pregame activities. He did not appear to be wearing any extra protective gear.

Marvin Harrison Jr., the offensive star known to be dealing with an injury coming out of the Notre Dame game, does not appear on the report. Ohio State coach Ryan Day said early in the week the All-American receiver would be full go this week. Harrison himself said Wednesday night his right ankle was “good enough” to play.

Day also earlier this week said he looked forward to getting running back Miyan Williams more involved against Maryland. That comment gains new context with news of Henderson’s absence. Day said Thursday the fifth-year senior had “a good week of practice.”

Through four games, Henderson had stayed healthy while regaining the game-breaking form he showed as a freshman in 2021. His 6.7 yards per carry rank fourth among Big Ten Conference running backs, and his five rushing touchdowns rank fifth. The last one covered 61 yards and came early in the third quarter at Notre Dame, giving OSU a 10-0 lead.

Williams’ touches have dwindled from eight to seven to five to one over the first four games. However, he was OSU’s leading rusher last season — largely due to the extra snaps he played while Henderson dealt with a recurring foot injury. That injury necessitated surgery after the season.

Coincidentally, Williams did not play against Maryland either of the last two seasons due to his own injury issues.

Chip Trayanum has operated as the true backup tailback in addition to his fullback/H-back duties. Ohio State could start either he or Williams against a Maryland run defense that ranks 49th nationally, allowing 3.51 yards per carry.

Dallan Hayden and Evan Pryor are other running backs in the mix if Ohio State needs to reach farther into its depth.

Henderson’s final game of last season came at Maryland, where he scored on an early 31-yard passing play but totaled only 19 yards on 11 carries. He totaled 169 yards and three touchdowns on 20 touches against the Terrapins as a freshman in 2021.

Backup cornerback Jyaire Brown is also listed as out. The second-year player has played only 22 snaps this season behind starters Denzel Burke and Davison Igbinosun and backup Jordan Hancock.
