Ohio State football coach Ryan Day’s salary approaching big, round, rare number
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football coach Ryan Day’s already competitive salary keeps moving closer to a rare tier of college coaches.
Day received a 5.25% raise last spring that brings his 2023 compensation to over $9.96 million. The USA Today Network first reported the raise, which went into effect last February 1.
Day is also eligible for a $250,000 retention bonus in January, per the amended contract announced in May 2022. That would push his salary beyond $10 million for the first time.

Per that 2022 contract extension, Day was eligible for increases in the supplemental media portion of his contact — at the discretion of athletic director Gene Smith — beginning Feb. 1, 2023.
For the 2022 season, only Alabama’s Nick Saban, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and Georgia’s Kirby Smart earned salaries above $10 million, per the USA Today salary database. Those coaches have won seven of the last eight national championships.
Smith has, in the past, said he endeavored to keep the OSU football coaching salary near the top of the sport. Discretion for Day’s future raises will soon shift to a new athletic director, as Smith has announced he will retire in June.
