New Year’s Eve and Day 2023: What’s open and closed

CLEVELAND, Ohio — New Year’s Day 2024 approaches but Northeast Ohio residents won’t find it as difficult to find open businesses during the holiday weekend.

Some retailers will close early on New Year’s Eve, but most will operate on regular hours for a Sunday. And restaurants and bars are hoping to be busy with people eager to welcome the new year.

Here is a list of hours and closings for businesses on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Federal offices: Closed

County offices: Closed

State offices: Closed

Post offices: Closed

RTA: Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority’s main office will be closed Sunday and Monday. The Sunday schedule will be offered on New Year’s Day.

Libraries: Cleveland Public Library branches will be closed New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Several other library systems will be closed on New Year’s Day, so check with local branches for hours.

Stores, restaurants, etc.: Most major retail stores, grocery stores and restaurants will be open and operating on regular hours through the New Year’s Day weekend. There are exceptions: Trader Joe’s will close at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and will be closed on New Year’s Day. Heinen’s, Sam’s Club and Costco also will be closed on New Year’s Day. Whole Foods will have reduced hours on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Several retailers such as Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target, and Walmart will be open on regular hours, as well as restaurants like Applebee’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Longhorn Steakhouse, Olive Garden, Red Robin and Starbucks.

Waste collection: There will be no trash pickup New Year’s Day in Cleveland, delaying pickup by one day for the week. Garbage pickup most likely will be delayed by a day in most communities.

Most major stores have reduced hours on New Year’s Day and some stores are closed. But you can still shop online all the time:
