Kyle McCord thinks Ohio State has a ‘scary good’ freshman who’s patiently waiting his turn: Buckeye Breakfast
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Add Ohio State’s starting quarterback to the list of people who are excited about Carnell Tate’s future.
Kyle McCord got asked about the player who caught his only touchdown pass during the 2023 Spring Game. Just as his high school teammate and top target Marvin Harrison Jr. once did, McCord didn’t mince words about the potential of the freshman receiver.
“Carnell’s been ready since the day he got here,” Tate said. “He was extremely polished. Obviously spending the last eight months with Coach (Brian) Hartline and Coach (Ryan) Day shaping up his game, he’s gonna be scary good.”
So far this season Tate’s role has been limited to just 62 snaps catching five passes for 83 yards and a touchdown as a guy learning behind Harrison, Emeka Egbuka and Julian Fleming. The potential absence of Egbuka against Purdue may provide a chance for him to get more opportunities on Saturday. Though more than likely that will mean more for Xavier Johnson.
Tate is patiently waiting his turn just as the guys ahead of him once had to do. As he waits, he’s continuing to turn heads in a way that suggests that the expected departures at the front of the wide receiver room won’t leave a void that won’t eventually be filled.
“I think it’s not if, but when for Carnell,” McCord said. “Whenever that is, he’s gonna take off.
Washington AD randomly calls out Ohio State
The Huskies are headed to the Big Ten next summer and their athletic director Troy Dannen already has a few things to say about one of the conference’s most established athletic departments.
In an interview with Seattle sports radio station 93.3 KJR, Dannen expressed his thoughts on whether he thinks having a bigger budget as an athletic department is a factor of success. He doesn’t think so putting the value more on the people who work in those departments then the money used.
It may be a fair point to make for someone trying to highlight the people working for him. But he did so while also feeling the need to take a jab at the Buckeyes.
“If budgets won championships, Ohio State and Texas would win everything — and they haven’t won much lately,” Dannen said.
The basis of his argument was part of a broad topic concerning Name, Images and Likeness and how it’s used to build athletic programs. The usage of OSU and the Longhorns is inspired by USA TODAY’s June revenue and expense report which ranked them as the top two programs in total revenue with Alabama, Michigan and Georgia completing the top five.
So that’s the two-time reigning national champion in the Bulldogs, two-time reigning Big Ten champions in the Wolverines, a Crimson Tide program that’s been the standard of college football for the past decade and an Ohio State program that’s had three College Football Playoff appearances in four years. Plus a Texas team that even after losing to Oklahoma last Saturday is still in a position to get its first playoff appearance if it wins out.
That’s without getting into the recruiting prowess of all of these programs. It would seem that contrary to Dannen’s words, there are plenty of benefits that having a big budget can afford you.

Black Stripe Alert
Joshua Mickens became the latest Ohio State newcomer to lose his black stripe in a tradition that makes a player an ‘official’ Buckeye.
Mickens was one of the final additions to OSU’s 2023 recruiting class as the No. 119 player and No. 17 edge rusher committing on during the first day of the early signing period last December after originally committing to LSU. As a senior at Lawrence Central High School in Indiana, he recorded 74 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. His recruitment marked the first real sign of a player who was brought in with Jim Knowles’ jack position in mind.
The former four-star recruit is the 15 member of the Buckeyes’ freshman class to lose his black stripe and final member of Larry Johnson’s three-man defensive line class alongside Jason Moore and Kayden McDonald. All three arrived over the summer.
